Nature Education for Kids
Plan a play day for your family at Kaweah Oaks Preserve

The joy of discovery
According to psychologists, spending time outdoors reduces parents’ stress levels and bolsters their children’s creativity, confidence, and health. There is even evidence that children with attention deficit disorder improve their academic performance after brief romps in the woods. Click here to read more about the health benefits of spending time in nature.
There hardly needs to be a medical reason to get your kids outside, though. Taking your kids outside creates positive memories that they will carry forever.
To get your child outside, you can:
- Attend one of Sequoia Riverlands Trust’s monthly nature walks
- Take a hike and have a picnic at Kaweah Oaks Preserve
- Encourage your child’s school to take students on curriculum-based field trips to Kaweah Oaks Preserve
- Play simple outdoor learning games that are fun for the whole family
- Use our bird lists to go “birding” on the Kaweah Oaks Preserve
Monthly Nature Walks
Monthly walks are nature education programs hosted at any of SRT’s nature preserves or other affiliated sites of natural and/or agricultural interest. In the past, monthly walks have included wildflower tours, bat watching, star gazing and farm tours. Please see our events calendar for more details, and sign up for our e-newsletter to receive periodic updates on upcoming events.
SRT requests a $10 donation for members and $15 for non-members to attend all events and monthly walks. Become a member on the day of an event and attend that day’s program for free (memberships begin at $35 for an individual and $50 for a family)!
Your donations allow us to continue providing unique, fun, educational experiences on our preserves. If you can’t afford to attend a program on a particular day, we still encourage you to come out and join us. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Nature Education Field Trips to KOP

Mother and son enjoying the view
Nature education field trips to the preserve teach kids about the natural world right in their community. KOP is just minutes from downtown Visalia, yet it preserves the landscape as it once was more than one hundred years ago. During field trips, students hike on forested trails and play educational nature games. Have your child’s teacher call or email SRT’s Education Coordinator, Laura Childers, to plan a field trip: 559.738.0211, ext. 105. Or send them to our website to fill out the online field trip request form and arrange a school tour, or download and and fax/mail it to us at 559-622-9477 (fax) or 427 S. Garden St, Visalia, CA 93277.

Volunteer for SRT
Join us as a volunteer and become directly involved in the maintenance of the land we all love. Keep your eyes on our calendar to find out about upcoming volunteer work days, or start your own volunteer project. The sky is the limit, and we welcome your ideas!
Eagle Scouts have been immensely helpful in the improvement of our preserve facilities and infrastructure. Several dedicated young men and their families have completed a variety of building projects, including: auditorium-style bench seating for school tours on Kaweah Oaks Preserve, trails for school tours, interpretive signage, and a shade house and work area for the Dry Creek Native Plant Nursery.
